Chromite - Chromium Ore
The name comes from the old word
chroma, which means “color.”
Chromium is used in the making of dwarven steel (‘nichrome’). It is dense and tough, and excellent for the making of armor and cutting tools. Svirfneblin have learned to manufacture a variety of steel called ‘stellite’ which includes chromium.
Chromium is also used as a mordant in dyeing cloth and in the making of yellow pigments. Certain elvish clans have discovered a way to use chromium to make a bright green pigment which is used to color leather gloves, calfskin and kidskin.
Nichrome contains approximately 16% chromium, 60% nickel and 24% iron.
Stellite contains approximately 34% chromium, 43% cobalt, 14% tunsten (or wolfram) and 9% iron.
